Advantages of neem tree

  Neem is widely prescribed by contemporary Ayurvedic physicians for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Van der Nat etal. (1991a) give an extensive review of in vivo studies and a limited clinical trial supporting the hypothesis that leaf extracts, seed oil and nimbidin exert hypoglycaemic / antihyperglycaemic effects.


    The general impression is that maybe neem enhances insulin receptor sensitivity since it seems to work well on Type II diabetics.

Breast Cancer

This is a cancer that develops from breast tissue, and it's one of the most common cancers affecting females. Most women who get it are over 40 years old, this is a ration of 8 to 10. Younger women and men also get this cancer in rare case. If it's treated early enough, breast cancer is curable and can be prevented from spreading to other parts of the body.

In this article, I will feature on breast cancer in women.

October

The month of October is worldwide Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's dedicated to raise consciousness about the thousands of women who are diagnosed with the disease every year. The pink ribbon and the colour pink in general, is an international symbol for breast cancer month. Pink is considered feminine and the roles that come with this gender like being beautiful, caring, good and being cooperative.

Signs and Symptoms to look out for:

Lump in the breast.

Fluid coming from the nipple.

Dimpling of the skin around the breast.

A change in breast shape.

A red scaly patch of skin.

Swollen lymph nodes, around the breast.

Shortness of breath.
Causes

No one knows the exact cause of this cancer. Medics rarely know why some women develop it while others don't. Most women who have this cancer will never be able to tell the exact cause. One thing for sure this cancer is always caused by damage to a cell's DNA.

Risks factors

Some of these risks can be changed and for some we can do little about as we have absolutely no control over them.

A female whose female relatives have had breast cancer is two to three times more likely to develop the disease. This is because the disease is hereditary.

Advancing in age. As we saw earlier the big percentage of cancer patients lies from 40 years of age onwards.

Lack of childbearing or lack of breastfeeding.

Great exposure to estrogen hormone. Estrogen makes cells to divide, the more the cells divide, they become abnormal, thus becoming cancerous. Estrogen exposure is greatly affected by the age a lady starts and stops menstruating, the average length of her menstrual cycle, and her age at first childbirth. Her risk for this cancer is increased if she starts menstruating before age 12, has her first child after age 30, or stops menstruating after age the age of 50 years and above. Also, if she has her menstrual cycle shorter or longer than the average 24-28 days.

Radiation exposure. If you get radiation treatments to your chest as a child or young adult, your risk of the disease is increased.

Diet. Research has shown that women with high fat intake diets are more prone to getting the disease.

Lack of physical activity.

The ladies that smoke and drink alcohol increase the risk of developing this cancer.

Chances of getting breast cancer are increased if you've had breast cancer in one breast before.
Diagnosis

Do self-examination of the breast always to check for the above symptoms. If you see anything suspicious see your doctor immediately.

Do mammography tests every two years for early detection.
Although screening for breast cancer cannot prevent you from getting breast cancer, it can help find it early when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which screening tests are right for you, and when you should have them.

Public Health England: Advice to eat more fat 'irresponsible

Advice to eat more fat is irresponsible and potentially deadly, Public Health England's chief nutritionist has said.
Dr Alison Tedstone was responding to a report by the National Obesity Forum, which suggests eating fat could help cut obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The charity said promoting low-fat food had had "disastrous health consequences" and should be reversed.
Other experts have also criticised the report saying it cherry-picked and misquoted evidence.
Low-fat or high-fat - does it matter?
Is butter back and is sat fat good?
Is breakfast a waste of time?
Are diet drinks a no-go?

Dr Aseem Malhotra, a senior adviser to the National Obesity Forum, said: "The change in dietary advice to promote low fat foods is perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history.
"We must urgently change the message to the public to reverse obesity and type 2 diabetes. Eat fat to get slim, don't fear fat, fat is your friend."
Risk
But the report has been criticised for not going though scientific peer review.
Dr Tedstone responded to the publication by saying: "In the face of all the evidence, calling for people to eat more fat, cut out carbs and ignore calories is irresponsible."
She said thousands of scientific studies were considered as part of the official guidance adopted throughout the UK, whereas the National Obesity Forum quoted just 43 studies, some of which were comment pieces.
She added: "It's a risk to the nation's health when potentially influential voices suggest people should eat a high fat diet, especially saturated fat. Too much saturated fat in the diet increases the risk of raised cholesterol, a route to heart disease and possible death."
The Royal Society for Public Health described the report a "muddled manifesto of sweeping statements, generalisations and speculation".

The report argues:
Eating fat does not make you fat
Saturated fat does not cause heart disease and full-fat dairy is probably protective
Processed foods labelled "low fat", "lite", "low cholesterol" or "proven to lower cholesterol" should be avoided
Starchy and refined carbohydrates should be limited to prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes
Optimum sugar consumption for health is zero
Industrial vegetable oils should be avoided
People should stop counting calories
You cannot outrun a bad diet
Snacking will make you fat
Evidence-based nutrition should be incorporated into education curricula for all healthcare professionals
The report also said humans had evolved to be a "healthy well-nourished species with a long life expectancy", but this had gone wrong in the past 30 years.
It said there was too much focus on calories when "it is highly irrelevant how many calories a portion of food on a plate contains" and it was "untrue" that excessive calories caused obesity.
Naveed Sattar, a professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said the report was "good, bad and ugly".
He backed calls to cut snacking, but said eating more fat as a cure for obesity and type 2 diabetes was "not warranted" by the evidence and would have "adverse" consequences.
He said the authors had been selective in their choice of evidence and had ignored "an abundant literature which goes against their conclusions".
The government's obesity adviser Prof Susan Jebb said the "current dietary advice is based on the best evidence we have".
She said the debate should be widened from a focus on fat. "We're eating too many calories - if we want to tackle obesity people do need to eat fewer calories [and] that means less fat and less sugar."

The Faculty of Public Health's Prof Simon Capewell said the focus on nutritional guidelines was "a huge distraction from the real causes of obesity" such as advertising cheap junk food to children.
And he said he was worried that the National Obesity Forum report "is not peer reviewed and does not indicate who wrote it or how it was funded".
The National Obesity Forum says it is an independent organisation that receives professional and financial support from the food industry, pharmaceutical companies and medical bodies.
Dr Nita Forouhi, says the contains some important omissions and some references had been misrepresented such as the recommendations around vegetable oils.
The scientist, at the MRC epidemiology unit at the University of Cambridge, told the BBC: "This is a highly selective review, it is not a systematic appraisal of the evidence and in places opinions are expressed that are not backed up by a body of evidence."
She praised the call to lower refined carbohydrates, but said the overall message to cut carbs ignored the issue of quality as "we do need wholegrain carbs and fibre in out diet".
Prof Tom Sanders from King's College London said: "It is not helpful to slag off the sensible dietary advice.
"The harsh criticism of current dietary guidelines meted out in this report is not justified as few people adhere to these guidelines anyway.
"There is good evidence that those that do follow the guidelines have less weight gain and better health outcomes."

Taking Guar Gum for Better Health

Guar bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba)’most commonly ground and used as guar gum’is a common ingredient in both processed foods and gluten-free baking. It also has health benefits and has been used to treat the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It can also help balance ‘good’ bacteria in your system and may be useful as an add-on treatment

The guar bean plant is grown in India and Pakistan as a vegetable and cattle fodder. The bean contains large amounts of galactomannan gum, which turns into a gel when guar bean is ground into a powder then mixed with water. It is this powdered form, guar gum, which is used both as an ingredient in foods and for use as a supplement.

How to use guar gum

Guar gum is sold in powdered form as a thickener and binder for baking and cooking and is often used in gluten-free recipes. If you’d like to try it as a supplement, the typical dose used in research studies, such as those in people with diabetes conducted at the University of Helsinki, is 1 teaspoon (5 grams) mixed into water, juice or milk 3 times a day. Talk with your doctor first; guar gum can decrease the effectiveness of some birth control pills, antibiotics and diabetes medications.

For baking: add 2 teaspoons (10 milligrams) for every cup (225 milligrams) of flour in a recipe.

Relief for digestive discomfort.

The latest on the health benefits of guar gum comes from the Gastroenterology Unit at Italy’s University of Genoa, where, in a series of studies, digestive-disease expert Edoardo Giannini added small amounts of this soluble fibre to the diets of a group of people with irritable bowel syndrome. Giannini’s first study, published in the journal Nutrition, attracted worldwide attention because the guar gum appeared to ease both the diarrhea and constipation that can come with IBS and soothed abdominal pain.

In a second study, Giannini found that adding guar gum to one of the newest IBS therapies’an antibiotic that knocks out overgrowths of bacteria in the small intestine’wiped out 91 percent of errant bacteria, compared to 86 percent with drugs alone. The guar gum advantage? It could be the fact that this fibre also reduces intestinal ‘transit time,’ moving stools’and presumably unwanted bacteria’out more swiftly. Other studies show that guar gum can help ease constipation and also promotes release of a natural, bowel-soothing lubricant called mucin, too.

Feeding the good bugs.

Bacteria aren’t just illness-causing villains. A growing stack of research shows that maintaining a healthy balance of ‘good bugs,’ or probiotics, in your digestive system could help ward off gastrointestinal problems, discourage the development of allergies in children and even influence how much you weigh and how well you. One key to nurturing the beneficial bugs: feed them well with ‘prebiotics’ such as guar gum.


Researchers from Italy’s University of Genoa found in a 2006 study that people who took guar gum daily had more of 2 types of good-bug probiotics, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, in their intestinal tract. Findings were similar in a study by the United Kingdom’s University of Reading, where 31 volunteers munched biscuits laced with guar gum or a placebo. The guar group’s levels of good bugs went up.

Do you Know About Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen daily is a must to lower your risk of developing skin cancer. But the type you choose and how to apply it makes a difference, too. Read on to ensure you're approaching sun protection the right way.
GO FOR BROAD PROTECTION. 
The label should say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection." (Or just look for the new Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.) The reason: UVB rays cause you to burn and increase your risk of skin cancer, but UVA rays break down skin elasticity, which causes wrinkles and lines, says Albert M. Lefkovits, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Any sunscreen you buy should also have an SP F of at least 15—which means that you can theoretically stay out in the sun 15 times as long as you could without any protection before burning. (SP F 30 is even better.) Remember to reapply at least every two hours.
