4 Tips To Get Your Hair Pool Ready

It’s no secret that chlorine can be taxing on the hair, especially if it’s chemically treated, but that’s no reason to avoid getting some much needed pool time this summer. Natural hairstylist Aeleise Jana shares some really simple tips for us to make a splash AND keep our hair from falling victim to the dangers associated with chlorine-laden pools.

1. Stop putting all the crap in your hair before you get in the pool.

There is no need to saturate your hair in conditioner or oils and what nots prior to swimming in the pool. Aeleise was a competitive swimmer throughout high school and she says, ” What you don’t want is being the person whom is actively responsible for creating that disgusting oil ring in the pool. No one wants to swim through that!” For the love of all things recreational, please don’t be THAT person who pollutes the water with the unnecessary pre-pool prep work

Know Your Body Type to Start Losing Belly Fat

Apple body types are at greater risk than pear body types.

An apple-shaped person is someone who holds a large amount of fat in the abdomen, has a large waist, and has generally slimmer legs and arms. If you’re an apple-shaped person, you tend to have a large amount of visceral fat, increasing your risk for heart disease.

A pear-shaped body type tends to have a smaller waist with larger hips and legs. Although an overweight pear-shaped person may still have higher than ideal levels of visceral fat, her risk for heart disease tends to be lower because she stores more fat in her extremities. As a result, she has less toxic fat surrounding her organs and producing dangerous hormones and byproducts.

Although it’s important for every body type to maintain a healthy weight and lose abdominal fat, it’s even more critical for you to lose weight to prevent future disease risks if you’re an apple-shaped type. The Belly Fat Diet plan is perfect for you and your type, because the weight loss in this plan is specifically geared toward losing your excessive belly fat.
The slim type can be a surprisingly dangerous body type.

10 Healthy Food Swaps for Losing Weight

Lighten up your mayo.

Swapping your regular mayonnaise for a lower-fat version can save significant calories. Light mayonnaise reduces calories per tablespoon to 35 or so, and total fat to between 3 and 4 grams per serving. Low-fat or reduced-fat varieties usually cut calories and fat to 15 and about 1 gram, respectively.

Going from 90 calories per tablespoon to 15 is a significant reduction, and when it comes to losing weight over the long term, these are the kinds of changes that really add up.

Try bacon of Canadian descent.

Swapping one ounce of American bacon for Canadian bacon saves 100 calories, 9 grams of total fat, 3

Health Tips for Heart, Mind, and Body

If you only do 5 things to boost health, what should you do?
1. Daily exercise.

You brush your teeth every day; exercise is equally important for your daily routine. Turn off the TV or computer, and get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

To work your heart, it's got to be aerobic exercise. You've got lots of options: walking, jogging, biking, rowing machine, elliptical machine, swimming. But don't feel like you have to be an athlete. Walking is great exercise. Get 10 minutes here and there during the day. It all counts.

Start with something simple, like parking in the far corner of the parking lot -- so you get those extra steps to the door. Take the stairs one or two flights instead of the elevator. If you take public transportation, get off one stop early and walk the rest. Get out at lunch to walk. Or walk with your significant other or your spouse after work. You'll get a bonus -- relaxation and stress reduction.

2. Healthy diet.

Quit eating junk food and high-fat fast food. Your heart, brain, and overall health are harmed by foods high in saturated fats, salt, and cholesterol. There's no getting around it. You've got to replace them with healthy foods: lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil -- what we call the Mediterranean diet. Eat like an Italian, a Spaniard, a Greek! Enjoy!

3. Weight loss.

Too much body weight puts your health at great risk. When you take in more calories than you burn, you get fat -- it's that simple. You've got to eat less. You've got to exercise more. You've got to push yourself to make these lifestyle changes -- but you've got to do it to help avoid serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, or stroke.
4. Regular physical exams.

Tell your doctor your family medical history. Learn your personal risk factors, and the screening tests you need. Women may have mammograms to screen for breast cancer and Pap tests for cervical cancer. Men may have prostate cancer PSA tests. Routine screening forcolorectal cancer should start at age 50, perhaps earlier if colon cancerruns in your family. You also need regular diabetes, blood pressure, andcholesterol tests. Make sure your immunizations are up to date. You may need flu and pneumonia shots, depending on your age.

5. Less stress.

When a person says they're too busy to exercise, it tells me other things are crowding out what's important in life: They don't spend time with family and friends; don't exercise enough; don't eat right; don't sleepproperly. All these things reduce stress in your life, and that is critical to your health and longevity.

To be healthy, we need to set boundaries -- and set limits on work hours. We should not be working so hard that we're neglecting the things that keep us healthy. This is important advice, too, for people who take care of elderly parents or young children. Make sure you're getting proper exercise and sleep -- and that you're not trying to do too much.

4 Simple Tips That Will Help You Reach Your Running Potential

1. Claim the title.

"If you are putting in the effort, you are a runner. I don’t have enough middle fingers for people who say that those who aren’t fast or aren’t doing a certain mileage aren’t runners. To me, this sport is measured in hustle: Did you actually move your body today?"

2. Don't overcomplicate things.

"People get into these crazy debates: 'What Garmin should I wear?’ ‘What are the most expensive shoes?’ It’s almost an excuse to avoid the actual training and grittiness of the sport. Just shut up and run!"

3. Broadcast your goals.

"If you want to stay accountable, you have to tell someone. Don’t be ashamed to take that running selfie. When you make your goal public, it’s hard to backtrack. Let that pride drive you."

4. Find your fast.

"Besides your long run, speed work is the linchpin to a training plan; do it once a week. It can be just a fartlek, where you are running hard for two blocks and then jogging for two. Listen, 30 seconds of a fast run done repeatedly can be a game changer."

Zika Virus Likely to Spread in U.S. ‘in the Next Month

The Zika virus will likely begin spreading in the U.S. “in the next month or so,” a top health official said Sunday, highlighting the need for “forceful preparation.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the federal government needs to ensure any local outbreaks of the disease don’t spread widely. “We already have Zika in the United States. But it is travel-related,” Fauci said during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.
